NARCOG Foundation WORX Team Participates in Serve Day 2024
The NARCOG Foundation WORX team participated in Serve Day 2024, partnering with local churches in and around the City of Hartselle.
NARCOG appreciates Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Shelton Sign for being partners of NARCOG Foundation WORX. This was the first official project, and we anticipate many more in the future while we serve the Cullman, Lawrence, and Morgan communities.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
SCSEP Digital Certification Program
The Center for Workforce Inclusion is offering a Digital Certification Program (DCP) to Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) participants!
DCP was created by the Center for Workforce Inclusion (CWI)to combat ageism and prepare older adults for a modern workplace.

Decatur-Morgan County Port Authority Warehouse Expansion
The Decatur-Morgan County Port Authority’s Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Warehouse Expansion Grant Project is now complete and closed out. 
 The project was partially funded by a $1,000,000 ARC Grant Award administered by NARCOG.

NARCOG is currently hiring part-time drivers to join our dedicated team. 
This position involves providing reliable and safe transportation services to seniors and individuals with disabilities in our community.

Cullman Cornhole Baseball Tournament
Fifteen teams of competitive senior citizens competed in the inaugural Senior Cornhole Baseball Tournament at Cullman Christian School on Friday, July 26. 
The Rowdy Bunch team from the Hanceville Senior Center emerged as the champions, while the Cullman Senior Center players were runners-up.

Planning Team Submits Nearly $1.3 Million in CDBG Grants!
The NARCOG Planning and Grants Team was pleased to assist three of our communities with submitting nearly $1.3M in CDBG grants to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) this year. 
These grants will help with the funding needed to make infrastructure improvements for their low and moderate-income residents.

NARCOG Attends Summer EDAA Conference
NARCOG Executive Director Robby Cantrell and Director of Administration Kim Dove attended the 2024 Summer Economic Development Association of Alabama (EDAA) Conference to continue working alongside other professionals, legislators, and agencies focused on promoting programs, policies, businesses, and quality-of-life activities in Alabama.

Thank you To Our Transit Drivers!
With this extremely hot weather the last couple of weeks, we are grateful for our Transit team and their dedication to providing an essential service to the City of Decatur. As a thank you, each driver received a goodie bag with little treats, including a gift card to Chick-fil-A and a notepad from Renasant Bank, both provided by their respective companies.

Meals on Wheels Receives Nearly $2,400 From Hartselle Health Fair
NARCOG recently participated in the Hartselle Health Fair hosted by The Cottages. Through sponsorships, a total of $4,450 was collected.
$2,083 was used to fulfill senior center wish list items, and the remaining $2,367 was donated to Meals on Wheels.

Alabama SenioRx – Free and Low-Cost Prescriptions
Alabama SenioRx is a program designed to assist seniors and those of any age with disabilities in obtaining the prescription medications they need but may be unable to afford. The program offers a lifeline to those without prescription drug coverage, those underinsured, or who fall into the Medicare Part D “donut hole.”

NARCOG has been busy attending career fairs, collecting blankets, and helping serve the community. Check out what we’ve been doing in November! Visit our Website 
400 Blankets Collected For Annual Holiday Drive
NARCOG had another successful Annual Holiday Drive collecting blankets for roughly 275 low-income SSI clients and disabled SSI clients of any age.
With the help of our community, NARCOG was able to collect 400 blankets! Extra blankets will be given to assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and Hands Across Decatur.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
Planning and Development Team Attends NAIDA
The Planning and Development Team recently attended the North Alabama Economic Development Symposium covering the EVolving Landscape in Huntsville, Alabama.
This project presentation covered electric vehicles, solar power, and more.

From health fairs in Lawrence County to National Caregiver Luncheons, the NARCOG Aging Team has been a busy bunch. 
In December, NARCOG will host a Virtual Dementia and attend the Cullman Senior Christmas Party.

Thank you, Board of Directors!
The Annual Board Picnic for the TARCOG Board of Directors took place on June 27 at Civitan Park in Guntersville. 
This year’s guest speaker was Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth, who hails from Marshall County. Lt. Gov. Ainsworth shared an overview of the exciting things happening in North Alabama and the important work the legislature accomplished this year. 
Mayor Leigh Dollar also spoke, welcoming everyone to Guntersville, and Board Treasurer John Myers served as the “picnic liaison,” ensuring that the food, fellowship, and weather were perfect!

Serving People: A Busy June! Looking Back at Our Events 
The Masters Games of Alabama is dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active adults ages 50+ through social, mental, and physical activities. 
Throughout June, the District 2 Masters Games saw over 100 athletes from Northeast Alabama compete in dominoes, pickleball, basketball, cornhole, shuffleboard, bowling, billiards, and more. Qualifying participants will advance to the State Masters Games in October. 
TARCOG Community Service Coordinator and District 2 Board Member Emmitt Davis says, “We like to see our seniors exercise because exercise is really the key to life right now. Socialization is very important for our seniors. We support and encourage our seniors to go out to the senior centers and participate…and really be active.”
Event sponsored by Viva Health and Humana.
On June 28, TARCOG held its 2nd Annual PEACE Conference and Fraud Summit at First Baptist Church in Huntsville. This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) event educates the public on how to recognize abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation faced by senior adults. 
With over 110 registrants, the event was educational and impactful for all. 
Speakers included Kenny Anderson, Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the City of Huntsville; Don Daniel, author of The P.I.L.L. Method: A Better Way to Eliminate Debt; Robyn James, Director of the Elder Justice Center of Alabama; and representatives from Alabama Securities Commission, AshaKiran, and Huntsville Hospital.
Event sponsored by the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama, the Alabama Securities Commission Investor Protection Trust, Brookshire Healthcare, AARP Alabama, Home Instead Senior Care, and Starbucks. 
Improving Communities: Consultant Selected for Safe Streets Initiative
In February 2023, TARCOG was awarded a $400,000 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant to create a safety action plan that addresses traffic injuries and fatalities throughout its four-county Rural Planning Organization service area.
This month, Alta Planning and Design was selected as the consultant for the project.
The SS4A initiative will kick off in August, and the action plan is slated to be completed in January 2025.

Growing Our Economy: Program Highlight: RLF Small Business Loans
Did you know that TARCOG offers a Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) to help local businesses finance expansions or obtain start-up capital?
The RLF is administered through Neighborhood Concepts, Inc. and is available to eligible local businesses with 100 or fewer employees.

NARCOG has been busy supporting the community, submitting grant applications, and working to keep our seniors healthy. Check out what we’ve been doing in July!
 Foundation Makes A Positive ImpactIn the spirit of the NARCOG Foundation, NARCOG awarded $50,000 to Lawrence County Fire and Rapid Rescue Association (LCFRRA) to be split equally among ten fire departments. Each department was able to use the money how they saw fit.

Plan Hartselle The City of Hartselle is working on a new Comprehensive Plan to help with future growth. Public opinion is needed to help shape the Plan. The Kick-Off Open House Workshop is open to the public and will be held at the Hartselle Civic Center on August 17 at 5:30 PM.

Lawrence County Awarded $1M ARC Grant The Lawrence County Commission was awarded a $1 Million Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Grant for First Solar’s Infrastructure Improvements Project.

Garden City Receives RAA Grant The Town of Garden City in Cullman County was awarded $250,000 from the Rebuild Alabama Act (RAA) Annual Grant to help improve road infrastructure.

Morgan County Senior Health Fair Seniors from all over Morgan County were invited to a senior health fair held in Hartselle. This event was unique because sponsorship fees helped fulfill senior center wish lists, with the rest being donated to the NARCOG Foundation.

AIRS Certified Deann Saint, a NARCOG Information and Referral Specialist, recently passed her AIRS CRS-A/D exam. AIRS CRS-A/D stands for Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS) Certification for Community Resource Specialist – Aging/Disability (CRS-A/D). Deann is one of ~4,400 people around the United States holding an AIRS certification.
